Berezovsky thought behind false reports on Chaika resignation

The Russian Prosecutor General`s Office said Wednesday that Russian fugitive tycoon Boris Berezovsky may be behind false reports about the alleged resignation of the country`s prosecutor general.

On Wednesday Russia`s popular daily Vremya Novostei reported citing an unofficial source that Prosecutor General Yury Chaika had decided to resign because he allegedly did not agree with a reform, proposing setting up an investigative committee within his office.

"It is no accident that this absurd news has appeared in one of the newspapers, similar information was placed almost simultaneously on a Web site that has been actively covering Boris Berezovsky`s activities, whose extradition is obstinately sought by the prosecutor general," the Prosecutor General`s Office said in a statement.

Berezovsky, a billionaire who emigrated to the United Kingdom in 2001 and was granted political asylum, is wanted in Russia on charges of fraud and corruption. In January this year, he caused an international stir by announcing in a media interview that he was working on overthrowing Putin`s administration by force. Since 2002 all Russia`s requests for Berezovsky`s extradition have been turned down.
