Russian senator: Ratification of Russia-US treaty on peaceful nuclear energy is "well-prepared breakthrough"
The ratification of the agreement between Russia and the USA on peaceful use of the nuclear energy "is a well-prepared breakthrough in the bilateral relations in the most sensitive field up to date," first deputy chair of the Federation Council committee for natural monopolies Valentin Mezhevich told.
The document will become basis for establishing new working relations between the countries, Mezhevich said, reminding that Russia cooperates actively with the USA in supplies of uranium for American energy companies in the frameworks of the project "Low Enriched Uranium - Highly Enriched Uranium" (a Russian-US treaty that envisages irreversible processing of Russian weapons uranium into fuel for nuclear power plants in the USA).
"Practically, each tenth electric bulb in North America works thanks to the energy processed form the Russian uranium," Mezhevich stressed.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President George Bush approved the treaty on cooperation in peaceful nuclear energy. The document allows exchanging nuclear materials, facilities and equipment. The treaty envisages new format of cooperation with other countries.
