Newborn Sibirian giant has health problems
Russia`s heaviest-ever newborn baby, born in the Altai Territory in southern Siberia in September, has serious health problems, the region`s chief pediatrician said Friday.
"The baby is under the special care of the local health department," Galina Kagirova said.
She added that large babies are rarely born without health problems, and that baby Nadezhda (Hope), who weighed in at 7.75kg (17.1lb), was no exception.
The record-breaking baby was born at a maternity clinic in Aleisk on September 17. Her mother, Tatiana Khalina, 42, underwent a Caesarean delivery.
Several days after the birth, Nadezhda was transferred to a children`s hospital in Barnaul, the capital of the Altai Territory, in southern Siberia.
The mother said she was not surprised by the girl`s record weight, as the first of her 11 children had weighed more than 5kg (11lb) at birth, and the others "beat the records set by their brothers and sisters".
Statistics say the average weight for newborn babies is about 3.2 kg (7lb).
According to the Guinness Book of Records the heaviest baby ever, who weighed 13.26 kg (29.23lb), was born in 1939 in Illinois, U.S., but died several hours later of respiratory problems. The heaviest surviving newborn was a 10.2kg (22.5lb) boy, born in 1955 in Italy.
