Tursunov steadies nerves to vanquish Verdasco in tennis open

Russian Dmitry Tursunov had to manage his own nerves before nailing down a 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 6-4 win over Fernando Verdasco to reach the final of the Thailand Open on Saturday.

"I got tense in the third set," said Tursunov, who went up two breaks in the final set, lost one of them and finally iced the victory after nearly two and a half hours with a backhand winner down the line on his third match point.

"We were not playing very clean tennis the entire match and there were a lot of mistakes on return.

"His forehand is a huge weapon and he will punish you. When he gets desperate, the starts going for huge shots, it`s like the snowball effect."

The number 29, who lifted the Indianapolis title two months ago and them promptly lost his next three matches in the first round, will play his second final of the season on Sunday against either third-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych or German Benjamin Becker.

"I hope I`m gonna play well and not choke out there," said the California-based Russian. "If I win tomorrow and then lose my next three matches, maybe it won`t be such a blessing."

Tursunov was competing in his fourth semi-final of the year, having lost to Andy Roddick at Queen`s and Ivo Karlovic in Nottingham.

Tursunov won his first career trophy a year ago this week in Mumbai and is seeking to defend all of those points with a possible title on Sunday at the Impact arena.

Tursunov and Verdasco, the eighth seed who won their only previous meeting at Roland Garros this year, duelled on level footing in the 61-minute opening set with the pair each failing on a break point.

It went down to the decider, where the Russia edged ahead 4-1 and secured the opener with an overhead winner on the second of three set points.

Verdasco made a match of it in the second, saving two break points at 4-all to take a 5-4 lead. He broke Tursunov a game later to square the match.

Tursunov struck 11 aces, while eighth seed Verdasco had only three but managed seven frustrating double-faults.

The semi-final still attracted 7,000 spectators at an event which lost Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roddick to injury pullouts.
