Metro use decreases
Passenger turnover on the Moscow Metro has dropped by 200,000 people over the last several months, Moscow metro head Dmitry Gayev told Izvestia newspaper earlier this month. The metro carries 9.5 million passengers every 24 hours.
"Recently we have noticed a surprising trend, there have been less passengers," said Gayev. "Over the last three months, passenger turnover has dropped by 200,000 people. Clearly the crisis is having an effect."
According to Gayev, the people who are leaving Moscow are those who were recently working on the city`s construction sites. Gayev said this was, however, a temporary phenomenon and that "sooner of later they will return".
He added that the only way to increase the comfort and reliability of metro journeys was to further develop the metro system.
"By the end of this year we will open five new stations: Myakinino, Volokolamskaya, Mitino, Marina Roshcha and Dostoyevskaya."
