Seven miners die of carbon monoxide poisoning in northeast China
Seven people have died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning at a coal mine in northeast China, Xinhua news agency reported.
According to the agency, the accident took place late on Monday night in the Jilin Province with five miners dying at the scene of the incident and two more during the rescue operation.
Four more miners were injured, but their lives were reported to be not in danger after they were rushed to hospitals and received medical treatment.
Safety authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident, the agency added.
The coal industry in energy-hungry China is one of the most dangerous in the world due to poor work safety standards and intensive work schedules.
Some 7,000 lives are lost annually in accidents at coal mines in the country, and China has been trying to close small mines or merge them into larger state-owned companies to avoid frequent tragedies.
