Scientists cure cancer with modified cells
Chinese scientists will be the first in the world who will conduct the human trials, introducing into the organism the modified cells. Innovative clinical trial will be held next month.
The team led by oncologist Lu Yu hospital of Sichuan in Western China have received the approval of the Supervisory Board of the hospital July 6 for testing gene-edited cells in lung cancer patients next month, according to scientific journal Nature. Cells can be modified using the CRISPR-cas9 - a new method of genetic engineering that allows scientists to edit DNA with accuracy and relative ease.
"This method has great potential in providing benefits to patients, especially cancer patients who we treat every day," said log Lu.
The technique is based opening 10 years ago that some bacterial cells can identify invading viruses and to chop up their DNA. CRISPR-cas9 adapts this method to allow us to change the genes, the removal of harmful diseases and even allowing you to create hybrid bodies of man and animals to fill the gap of transplant.
By nature, a Chinese court will attract patients with lung cancer for which chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other treatments are not successful. Command extracts immune cells from patients, as well as edit them using CRISPR-cas9. Then cells are re-injected into the bloodstream in order to destroy cancer cells, but did not attack on others.
"I hope we are the first," Lou said Nature. "And more importantly, I hope we can get positive data from the study."
