The diver found a sunken city of Heraklion
French diver Frank Goddio made an extraordinary discovery. He discovered the ancient city of Heraklion, which for millennia has been submerged under water.
The fish made their homes from the wreckage of mighty temples. Gods and kings sat stagnant, powerless, their statues had been slowly disintegrating. Goddio spent years shooting this finding. Also, as another sunken city is Canopus, which was rediscovered by a British pilot in the Royal air force in 1933 who noticed the debris leading to the water.
Thanks to a new exhibition at the British Museum, the incredible findings of Goddio will soon be open to the public. The exhibition "the Sunken city: the Worlds of Egypt" opens on may 19. The curator of the Museum is aurц?lia Masson. The exhibition will show the greatest riddles of archaeology.
Heraklion and Canopus known in Greek mythology and now we know where they were. Most likely, these cities acted as a trading point between Ancient Egypt and Greece. But circumstances eventually conspired against them, explains Masson. Natural disaster sank the city.
Also it became known about the religious idols of the time. The statues were depicted with human traits. A colossal head of the statue of Serapis will be on display along with other large objects that blur the boundaries between the Greek and Egyptian civilizations.
The biggest element on the screen is a statue of hapi, ironically the God of floods. The statue is 16-feet tall and weighing 12,000 pounds, pink granite sculpture is dated in the VI century BC, long before the Heraklion disappeared in the sea.
It is also worth noting that the team, Goddio much left on the seabed. Archaeologist found 69 ships: "the largest Assembly of boats ever discovered," said Masson. All this, however, is only a drop in the ocean.
