Egypt police on alert as protests loom
Cairo police have been put on high alert for anti-government rallies after evening prayers on Friday, media reports say.
Egypt`s largest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, has called for its followers to take to the streets after the weekly prayers as protests continue against the rule of President Hosni Mubarak, who has ruled the country since 1981.
At least seven people have been killed and up to 1,000 arrested since the protests began four days ago, inspired by the so-called Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia, which ousted President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.
Leading Egyptian opposition figure and Nobel laureate Mohamed ElBaradei returned to Cairo on Thursday and has vowed to join the demonstrators.
World leaders have called on the government and demonstrators to refrain from violence.
