Magnum Photo: Moscow meets legends

Experience the vision of the greatest documentary photographers of the 20th century. Moscow`s Garage Center for Contemporary Culture is set to open Leica-Academy - a series of master-classes with the legendary Magnum photographers.

Today even schoolchildren are familiar with Magnum`s name. With offices in New York, London, Paris and Tokyo and over 500,000 images available online, Magnum Photos provides imagery for the media, publishers, advertising, galleries and museums across the world. It remains the most acclaimed resource for documentary photography in the world. Moscow`s Garage offers the chance to meet some of the legendary company`s photographers in person.

Over nine days starting from September 9, Garage will host master classes with seven Magnum photographers, who have taken their cameras to the most remote corners and the flashiest hotspots in the world.

The opening session will connect you with Mark Power, who covered the fall of the Berlin Wall and life in Brighton`s slums. The next in line will be lectures and workshops from Magnum`s Chien-Chi Chang, Christopher Anderson, Jonas Bendiksen, Alec Soth, Thomas Dworzak and the only Russian at Magnum Gueorgui Pinkhassov, who will uncover some of their secrets and share experiences.

Apart from an opportunity to meet the gurus, the program of Leica-Academy will also include a series of movie screenings entitled Magnum in Motion.

Participation in the lectures is free of charge, however the number of seats is limited. Hurry up and register if you want to come.

In November 1947 four men whose names were destined to forever enter the history of photography founded the first photo agency in the world. These men were Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, George Roger and David Seymour. Capa`s brainchild, Magnum was a co-operative picture agency owned by its members. The team of photographers arranged their work smartly, dividing assignments among the members. Over the 20th century there was not a single significant event that stayed uncaptured by Magnum photographers. They covered everything from the Vietnam War to the fall of the Berlin Wall and 9/11 in New York.
