Poland interested in normal relations with Russia
Recently appointed Polish Foreign Minister Stefan Meller said he will take steps to bring relations with Russia back to normal.
"Our relations have seen many problems over the past two years. I had to deal with them when I worked as ambassador to Moscow. There were economic problems, but more serious problems tended to emerge in political and historical matters. They include different approaches to the 1945 Yalta conference agreements and assessments of the events in Katyn," Meller said in an exclusive interview with Interfax.
"Over the past few years, we in Poland have also learnt about painful facts from our history. Debates erupted over, among other matters, our fellow-countrymen`s attitude to German civilian prisoners and the elimination of the Jewish population in a small Polish town. However, we managed to tell each other the truth. Our arguments certainly witnessed difficult periods, but we managed to get through it all," he said.
"I, as foreign minister of Poland, will see to it that attempts to humiliate each other no longer take place in our relations. I expect Russia to do the same," the foreign minister said.
