Jaundice caused by technological mistake in Nizhniy Novgorod
Accusation was brought against technologist of Nizhniy Novgorod water channel, who didn`t shut down water supply after disclosure of hepatitis A agents. He can be sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment for 3.6 thousands of citizens falling sick of jaundice.
Office of Public Prosecutor of Nizhegorodsky oblast accused head technologist of municipal water supply station Aleksey Gubanov of hiding of information about hepatitis A presence in water. The virus was discovered by epidemiologists in tests of drinking water before outburst of illness. Action has been brought according to article 237, part 2 of Russian Criminal Code ("Hiding of information about circumstances, threatening to life and health of people"), which provides large penalty or imprisonment up to 5 years.
"Suspect refused to give testimony, - informed pres-service of regional Office of Prosecutor. - He gave a written undertaking not to leave territory of the region".
Outburst of acute viral hepatitis A was registered in Nizhniy Novgorod in beginning of September and continued till end of December, 2005. By present moment number of sick people exceeds 3600 people. The cause of illness became use of cold water, infected by virus. By words of deputy chief of Russian consumer inspection department Olga Knyagina, people still address to medical institutions with symptoms of illness. Now infection spreads by contact way - from person to person.
