During the Day of the defender of the Fatherland in Moscow and other hero-cities will be givenholiday artillery salute.
Sergey Ivanov the Minister of Defense of Russia gave an order about this on the eve. "In the commemoration of the Day of the defender of the Fatherland I order: on 23 February 2006 at 21.00 to local time give the holiday artillery salute in the capital of our native land Moscow hero-city, in the hero-cities St. Petersburg, Volgograd, Novorossiysk, Tula, Smolensk and Murmansk, and also in Kaliningrad cities, Rostov-on- Don, Ekaterinburg, Chita, Khabarovsk, Vladivostok, Severomorsk and Sevastopol" he said in the order.
As they reported in the Defense Ministry, in Moscow the salutewill be produced from 31 points, the main of them - Vorobyev mountain and Poklonnaya mountain. Furthermore, there will be organized on 5-6 "saluting points" in each administrative district. In all will be produced 30 volleys.
It is also noted in the order of the Minister of Defense of Russia to the Day of the defender of the Fatherland that this holiday "has long ago occupied its worthy place in the number of the most respected holidays of our country". "It personifies its heroic military chronicle, the indissoluble connection of generations; the succession of the traditions of the selfless service to the fatherland and it is the deserved acknowledgement of service for the state" it is said in the document.
The holiday celebrated today was established by the edict of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR of 8 February, 1993.
The Day of the defender of the Fatherland arose in 1918 as the birthday of the Red Army in the commemoration of the victory above German conquerors under Narva and Pskov. Since then yearly the 23 February was celebrated as the day of the Red Army.
Since 1946 the holiday began to be called Soviet Army and Navy day.
The State Duma of Russia on 10 February, 1995, accepted the federal law "about the days of the military glory (victorious days) of Russia", in which this day is named as follows: "23 February - Day of Victory of the Red Army above the Kaiser forces of Germany (1918) - the Day of the defender of the Fatherland".
