Eyes can warn about near stroke
By modification and damage of blood vessels of retina we can predict a probability of a stroke. That was a conclusion of doctor Paul Mitchell and his colleagues from Sydney University, Australia.
Scientists done their research among 3654 Australians by an age of 49 years and older. They took photographs of retina periodically to discover small damages of vessels or retinopathy.
The researchers were keeping an eye on participants of the experiment during 7 years. They fixed all strokes, reasons of deaths
It turned out that men with degradation of retina will have a stroke with 70% probability. Scientists took into account traditional risk factors: smoking and high blood pressure.
"Blood vessels of retina have the similar qualities to blood vessels in brain, - explained doctor Mitchell. - We need to do more tests to confirm our results, but we suppose that quite simple procedure of research of retina will help us to predict a probability of a stroke within the next few years."
