Supreme Court of the Russian Federation permits constructing eastern pipeline
Superior Court of the Russian Federation has recognized the decision of government about construction of oil pipeline "East Siberia - Pacific Ocean" to be legal.
In the opinion of several ecological organizations, this project can do irreparable damage to the ecology of Baikal and its territories, since it is planned pass too close to the lake. However Supreme Court of the Russian Federation has considered the complaint of ecologists ungrounded.
Specialists from "Transneft", the company, which has worked out the project of the construction, states that the region ecology will not suffer from the oil pipeline at all.
The resolution of the Supreme Court may be appealed in the board of the Supreme Court during 10 days. The representative of ecologists Constantine Razbash has already stated that he considers the conclusion "absolutely illegal".
On March 6, 2006, the constructors of the oil pipeline obtained the positive conclusion from State Ecological Expertise. It was personally affirmed by the head of Federal Service for Environmental, engineering and nuclear Supervision Constantine Pulikovsky.
80 million tons of oil per year are planned to be exported through the oil pipeline "East Siberia - Pacific Ocean" into the countries of Asian-Pacific Ocean region, first of all into China and Japan. This is the second biggest infrastructural project in Siberia after Baikal- Amur main.
