Energoatom: Ukrainian NPP enough fuel to get through the winter
Ukrainian Nuclear power ready for winter and has sufficient accumulation of nuclear fuel for the adoption of alternative solutions in case of force majeure, said the head of the Ukrainian " Energoatom " (the operator of all existing nuclear power plants of Ukraine) Yuriy Nedashkovsky.
" Nuclear energy is ready for the autumn-winter 2014-2015. On security of its nuclear fuel and the volume of free places for storing spent nuclear fuel not only do we confidently pass the autumn-winter period, but also have sufficient provisions for the adoption of alternative solutions in case of any force majeure from suppliers, " said Nedashkovsky at the government meeting on Wednesday.
About 47% of the electricity generated in Ukraine, generate nuclear power plants, the rest is produced by thermal power plants by burning gas and coal, and hydroelectric power generation and " green " energy. The lack of gas and stop 80% of the mines in the Donbass because of the fighting has led to energy shortages and, consequently, power. Ukraine started to buy coal in South Africa. The issue with winter gas supplies from Russia to date has not been solved.
