New shootings burst out in Nalchik
Early in the morning shooting has broken out in Nalchik.
Officials said they were in the middle of a fresh operation against militants, who are believed to have Chechen links.
Residents are being urged to stay in their homes.
Parents are also being advised to collect their children from school.
Hundreds of extra troops were sent to the city last week to root out any remaining attackers. Russian media reports say police killed a man in the city earlier on Tuesday, when he resisted a document check. Two other men who were with him reportedly escaped.
Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev claimed responsibility for last week`s violence in Nalchik, the capital of the Kabardino-Balkaria region.
He said the attacks were carried out by militants affiliated with Chechen rebels.
It is still unclear how many people were killed in the raid.
Basayev said 41 of his fighters had died, while Russian mass media reported losing 33 members of its own forces. Twelve civilians have died.
As a result of the operation directed to extremists liquidation 33 members of the security forces had died.
