Biography Franco, Francisco (Francisco Franco)
4.XII.1892 - 20.XI.1975
Francisco Franco was born Dec. 4, 1892 in El Ferrol, in Galicia, north-western region of Spain. His father, Nicholas was a naval officer.
Franco entered the Military Academy in Toledo in 1907 and graduated in July 1910 as a second lieutenant. In 17 years he had fought in the Spanish Morocco against local rebels. Franco made a quick career. He became a major in 23 years, the commander of the Spanish foreign legion in 30, and a general in the 34. At that time he was the youngest general in Europe. However, in connection with the change of government in Spain in 1936 the situation deteriorated Franco.
In July 1936 there was carefully organized revolt against the Republican government, which grew in the Spanish Civil War. Its organizer, General Josö? Sanjurjo, died suddenly shortly after the beginning of the uprising. Franco became the leader of the rebels. In October he was named by the Head of State and Generalissimo Army. In 1937, Franco abolished all political parties except his breakaway party 'Phalanx'. He arrogated to himself the title of El Caudillo (leader).
Franco has formed a new cabinet in 1938 and became its prime. March 28, 1939 Franco's troops occupied Madrid, and the Civil War ended.
During the Second World War, Franco declared neutrality, took one or the other side, depending on who is currently won. Secret documents released in 1946 show, however, its close ties with Germany and plans to enter the war on its side.
In 1947, Spain was proclaimed a kingdom. Franco has been named by the Head of State for life, and was elected a special council, which was given the right to choose a successor after the death of dictator. In 1973, Franco resigned as Prime Minister of the Spanish Government. He remained head of state, commander in chief of the armed forces and leader of the phalanges. When Franco was a very bad health in July 1974, and again in October 1975, its power was transferred to Prince Juan Carlos Bourbon.
El Caudillo died in Madrid in November 20, 1975.
