Born into a peasant family in the village Kumrovec (Croatia). In 1910 he joined the Social Democratic Party of Croatia and Slavonia (Slovenia) participated in the labor and trade union movement. In 1913 he was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian army, in January 1915 aimed at the Carpathian front, in the same year was in Russian captivity.
Autumn of 1920 he returned to Yugoslavia, joined the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (CPY). In 1921-27 he worked at the enterprises of Yugoslavia. Since February 1928 - Secretary of the Committee of the Zagreb CPY. In August 1928 he was arrested and sentenced to 5 years of hard labor prison. Coming from prison, resumed in 1934, illegal Party work as a member of the Regional Committee of Communist Party of Yugoslavia in Croatia. Since August 1934 - Politburo member of the CPY. In 1937 headed the Central Committee of CPY. In October 1940 elected General Secretary of the CC CPY.
In 1941-45 Tito was the supreme commander of the People's Liberation Army and Partisan Detachments of Yugoslavia. November 30, 1943 - Chairman of the National Committee of Liberation of Yugoslavia, Marshal of Yugoslavia. In March 1945 he was appointed chairman of the Council of Ministers, Minister of Defense and Supreme Commander of Armed Forces.
In August 1945, was elected Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Popular Front. In November 1952 at the VI Congress of the Yugoslav Communist Party, which adopted the decision to rename the party in the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia (LCY), Tito was elected General Secretary of the LCY. From 1953 and until his death, Tito - president of the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia (since 1963 - the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia).
After the break in 1948. the fault of the USSR leadership interstate and inter-party relations with Yugoslavia, Tito, resisted the ideological and political pressure from the Soviet Union and launched its own model of socialist society. Championed blocs policy, was one of the leaders of the Non-Aligned Movement.
