Autobiographical notes

My father, an officer came to Moldova with the liberation (or, as they say, with the occupation), the Red Army in 1944 and married my mother, but lived with her for a week. Left for Moscow.
I was born in 1946 in a small Southern town Moldovan Ceadцўr-Lunga, the house of my grandfather, a Polish Jew who came to Moldova to young at the end of last century. His name was Isaiah Horovsky. My Jewish relatives with the hope of a better life waiting for the arrival of the Red Army, but the troops came and removed the tiles with a new house, and instead issued a receipt. The family had to move to the old house. My mother (she was 22 years old) and her younger brother were the first Komsomol in this town. In 1952 my mother and I are moving in Chisinau, the capital city, and for me to start a new bright life. The city still in ruins, but life in full swing, everyone is happy that the war was over and famine that are alive, and Stalin promises a happy well-fed life.
One day my mother took me to the art museum and what I saw there struck my imagination. I began to paint, sculpt, carve. In 11 years I began to walk into the studio, at thirteen went to art school at the sculpture. At fifteen began to travel to Moscow to museums, exhibitions, began to visit the workshops. In 1965, after graduating from college, to get a deferment from the army, went to Moscow to take exams at the institute, which is simpler. I was admitted to the Faculty of modeling clothes in the Moscow Institute of Technology, where I studied for a year and then went. It was boring. Returning to Chisinau, I plunged into the artistic life of Moldova. A few years worked in the studio academic Lazarus Dubinovskiy, participated in many of his great works. In 1968 he first participated in an art exhibition in 1970 - joined the Union of Artists. For many years, was the youngest member of the Union, I tried to educate and guide, download, social work. In those years there were signs of stagnation under Brezhnev. During the reign of the Union men came without the talent, but convinced socialist realists, as guardians of the communist ideology. My work was not "socialist realist" and began to fight with me. I got into the "leftists". But I started to buy in Moscow and take on the All-Union Exhibition. My work bought by the Ministry of Culture and the Tretyakov. I was more often in Moscow and Moscow to participate in the artistic life.
Since the beginning of "perestroika" of life in Moldova changed abruptly, started a national revolution. Changed and the situation in the arts. Began to dominate the national and ethnographic trends, and again I do not fit in the situation. In 1988, I passed two major solo exhibitions of paintings, sculpture, graphics. Both were held in Chisinau and caused a critical assessment of the national-patriotic circles. I became a stranger in Moldova. At this time, I met with Marat Gelman, and he invited me to make a personal exhibition in Moscow. It was held in 1989 and the gallery "House 100" and received a response in the Moscow press.
With this exhibition, opened a new Moscow-strip of my life. My wife divorced me and left with the children in New York, and I moved to Moscow.
All these years in Moscow, I shall cooperate with Gelman Gallery, participate in all major projects, a gallery in Russia and abroad. During that time held 10 personal exhibitions. I work in the field of painting, sculpture, graphics, installations, photography.

Criticism

Yuri Horovskogo gallery owner Marat Gelman spoke about the essence of his work: "When a central place in art took hero. Now he was gone, turned into a comic book character. Took place hero Batman, Superman, Mickey Mouse is finally. Horovsky trying to pull the hero back to the art. But after passing through the mud and mess of our lives, this hero is no longer like a beautiful Greek gods. His Hercules - the hero who had been in the role of Superman. It's sad but true. Christ, having participated in the rock opera "Jesus Christ - Superstar" will not take off points Ian Gillan. "
Horovsky agrees: "Yes, it's beautiful. I like when me say so, but it is only culture-background against which I work. I want to use it as one of the materials - such as paint or paper, for example. For all the posters around watching Schwarzenegger - a new hero. For it can only refer ironically ... But as an artist, I meet another challenge: I live in plastic ... "
Horovsky often uses classical themes, the eternal characters, mythological scenes axiomatic literature and history. He is Christ, Daphnis and Chloe with the wife of Lot and the Last Supper, Hercules, and Cain with Abel. But they are all fundamentally far from its classical incarnation, painted by old masters. How to write an intelligent critic: "If tempted by modernism, or passing nearby, or heard about this scandal, or living at the same time, or living then - did not return to tradition with an open heart, not tayaschim ultimate irony". Heroes Horovskogo written ironic, but, nevertheless, not humiliated, they remain heroes. True, the heroes of our time.
For example, now on his desk - a relief from papier-mache. Leo, tearing bull. For explanation of the small statues HYSH century. Just look at the beast, weary own bloodlust, empty. And bull lethargic, his pain over the centuries lost its former sharpness ...
. Yuri Horovsky, . how today it is known by a dozen exhibitions, . ten publications in prestigious journals, . work, . stored in the collections of several Moscow galleries and businesses, . in private collections and foreign museums, . - Such Horovsky was born in 1988,
. Then he was a successful and smooth biography (for 42 years - one of the first Moldavian sculptor) as it broke. I started a new biography. It virtually nothing from the old life - new environment, new address and, of course, very different work. Now he is more painter, . than sculptor, . Although critics find in his paintings still longing for the "heavy" material in all - in songs, . subjects (out of water fish, . giant, . head down to the block of granite ...), . shading in figures, . if carved from stone,
. Hardly a stone to replace papier-mache. Layer upon layer of old newspapers lie with old news, farther in time, the previously unthinkable headers close up words, which become yesterday, until the glue dries.
... By the way Horovsky generally refers not too good. Therefore, such a conversation, . I love - without the right questions, . but with the free composition, . allow to be distracted by the weather, . Recent vernisazhnye banquets friends and anything else: a dialogue, . in which the birth is something more important, . than the plain language of the postulates of creativity, . - Understanding, . - So that's a conversation we have not got,
. In biographical question Yura replied: "I was a sculptor. And then it happened that I had to go to art. Because health. My heart ached ". The myth of his biography, he did not develop. History is devalued if it is often beautiful retelling, it turns into kitsch. (Exactly the same thing is happening with art: achievement, once aroused controversy, and opinions range from rapture to rage, tomorrow has gripped the masses and sold on the Arbat. This idea, beloved Gelman, also applicable to the work Horovskogo. His incarnation of classic stories, well-learned by all, who can hold the brush and chisel - a vaccine against the dominance of flea plaster cupids and carefully painted Madonnas.). And the story was this: a heart attack, resuscitation, and the feeling that time is short. What it can not spend on vanity, in which fewer and fewer places left for serious work. So I get, perhaps, too lofty, and yet the notion of the heroic in working Horovskogo, as already mentioned, completely devoid of pathos ...
"The last two years I got bored watching avant-garde, - explains Jura. - Maybe it's age, but for me now, this discovery was real art, especially those areas that are not included in the basic history of art. I want to use their new knowledge. I think the richer the cultural richness of the work, its plastic, and sociality, the more possible the associative array - the better .. "
And the truth - better. Associative number Horovskogo rich and varied, and not always easy to understand, whether the author is serious or joking. Comic and tragic in his work are fused, as it always happens in life and in the present art.
