Biography Yegor Ivanovich Zolotarev
(1847 - 1878). He graduated from the course at St. Petersburg University. The essay "On a question about the smallest values" appointed privat-docent, and for the essay "On an indeterminate equation of 3rd degree, received a master's degree in pure mathematics. In 1872, Mr.. Zolotarev gave a proof based on the theory of elliptic functions for the Chebyshev method, the crucial question of the integrability of certain algebraic differentials in finite form. Together with Professor Korkin Zolotarev taken to find the exact limit for minimum'a positive square forms, their results are set out in three memoirs, published in the journal "Mathematische Annelen" (t. V, 1872; t. VI, 1873, t. XI, 1877). The question, selected by the authors, belongs to the most difficult. Before their memoirs were known only the simplest cases relating to the forms of binary and ternary. In his memoirs, this question has been settled for the forms with four and five variables. In 1871 - 1877 he. Zolotarev generalized theory of so-called perfect numbers, depending on the roots of unity, and he distributed it to complex numbers, depending on what you want the roots of the equation with integer coefficients. Zolotarev then put his theory to the issue of integral calculus, a generalization of the above methods of Chebyshev. The results presented in the doctoral thesis: "The whole theory of complex numbers with an application to the integral calculus" (St. Petersburg, 1874). After receiving the degree of Doctor Zolotarev was appointed extraordinary professor, and in 1877. elected as an associate in the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Further results of their research on the theory of complex numbers Zolotarev described in a memoir "Sur la theorie des nombres complexes", published in "Journal de Mathematiques pures et appliquees" in 1880. He planned to have a lot of new works, but the sudden death ended his brilliant work. In addition to the above works, Zolotarev published several memoirs in the "Bulletin" of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences and Mathematics in scientific journals.
