He received a master's degree for a thesis: "The significance of Zhukovsky and Batiushkov in Russian literature" (1845), a doctorate for a thesis: "The subject, method and purpose of the philological study of the Russian language" (Kiev, 1846 - 1856). The latter work drew sharp attacks critics, pointing to the lack of familiarity with the author's comparative linguistics. Kostyra answered pamphlet: "Scientists of information about the attacks on the views of Professor Buslaeva Dorn academician and professor Kostyrya about the origin and meaning of symbols b and b in the Russian language" (Kharkov, 1851). Turning to Kharkov, Kostyra read the aesthetics and the history of Russian literature, and his lectures were in the nature of improvisation, with a touch of dreaminess.
