Originally from Calvinist family, but in the age of 21 adopted Catholicism, and was ordained. B. studied law and humanities, but after moving to Paris in 1633, Mr.. he renewed interest in astronomy, which he spent his childhood with his father. Subsequent years were for B. time academic career, he became known as Clarissimus Bullialdus (Bouillaud, Boulliaud, Bulliald). In 1663, Mr.. became the first foreign member, taken to the Royal Society of London.
B. was a supporter of the Copernican theory. The most important of his works - "Astronomia philolaica" (1645), is one of the most important treatises on the heliocentric concept, written in the period between Kepler and Newton. B. first established the periodicity of the star Mira (333 days).
B. was one of the last major astronomers maintain confidence in astrology. Among the works of B. - Editing astrological poem Mark Manilius "Astronomika" (1655) and the work "De judicanti facultate" Ptolemy (1667).
In honor of B. named grand lunar crater Bullialdus (in Mare Nubium).
