Biography GANDHI Rajiv (Gandhi Rajiv)
(1944-1971)
Born in Bombay on Aug. 20, 1944. His grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister of India from 1947 to 1964, and his mother Indira Gandhi held the same post from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 to 1984. Rajiv was educated in his grandfather's home. He studied at the elite school in India, then at Imperial College in London and at Trinity College, Cambridge University. Upon his return to India, worked in the company 'Indian Airways'. His younger brother Sanjay became a top political aide, Indira Gandhi and the leader of the Youth Congress. Rajiv showed no interest in politics. After the death of Sanjay in a plane crash, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv persuaded his brother to take a seat in Parliament and in the Youth Congress (1981).
When 31 October 1984, Indira Gandhi was killed by Sikhs in retaliation for military operations in Amritsar in June 1984, the Cabinet elected prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. For several days the Indians had killed thousands of Sikhs, and Rajiv was forced to resort to using the army to restore order. At the appointed general election of 1984 the Indian National Congress (I) won, receiving 80% of seats in the lower chamber.

Gandhi lifted many restrictions on the importation of goods into India and encouraged foreign investment, contributing to the economic growth of the country in 1986-1990. In 1987 was forced to send troops to the north of Sri Lanka to crush the Tamil separatists, stepped up the fight against Muslim groups in Kashmir.

In the elections in November 1989, Gandhi kept his parliamentary seat, but because of the loss of his majority party in Parliament was forced to resign from his post as Prime Minister. He headed the opposition to the Government of VP Singh. In March 1991, contributed to the downfall of the new cabinet. Rajiv Gandhi was killed by Tamils in Shriperumbudure near Madras, May 21, 1991.
