Biography Heyrovskö¥ Jaroslav (Heyrovsk Jaroslav)
(1890-1967)
Born December 20, 1890 in Prague. In 1918 he graduated from the University of Prague. In 1910-1913 he studied at University College, London University. In 1920 was promoted to an assistant at the Department of Chemistry University of Prague, in 1922 - an extraordinary, and since 1926 - an ordinary professor of Chemical Physics of the University of. In 1922, investigating the electrolysis in electrochemical cell with a dropping mercury electrode, fixed relationship between the nature of substances and their potentials of oxidation and reduction. These works formed the basis of polarography method, widely used in analytical chemistry. In 1925 Heyrovskö¥ (jointly with Japanese scientist M. Shikatoy) built polarography, the first automated device for analytical. In late 1920-1930-ies scientist strongly advocated his method: he gave lectures at the Sorbonne university in the United States, Soviet Union. In 1933 he was invited to the post of professor at the University of California. In 1950 in Prague was established polarographic National Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, whose director he became. In 1959, 37 years after the establishment of the method of polarography, its value was finally evaluated, and the Nobel committee awarded the prize in chemistry Czechoslovak scientists. Heyrovskö¥ been awarded many international awards and titles. Heyrovskö¥ died in Prague on March 27, 1967.
