DEAN, Alexander Gabriel (Decamps Alexandre Gabriel)

(1803-1860)
Born in Paris on March 3, 1803. He studied at the A.de Pyuzholya. Dean was a master of romantic landscape, illustrator and cartoonist of the Restoration and, most importantly, the first artist-Orientalist. 1827-1828 he spent in Constantinople and Asia Minor during his stay there learned a peculiar manner of transmission of the effect of the interpenetration of light and shadow. Painting Turkish Patrol (1831, New York, Metropolitan Museum), Dean brought fame. Among his other famous works: The defeat of the Cimbri (1834, Paris, Louvre), experts (cartoon depicting the art critics in the guise of monkeys) and a series of drawings of scenes from the life of Samson (1845). Dean died at Fontainebleau on Aug. 22, 1860.
