He served in the royal dockyard. Engaged in research in Africa. On behalf of King John II led a campaign on three ships along the coast of Africa to find a sea route to India. The expedition left from Lisbon in August 1486 (according to other sources - in 1487). She was supposed to continue south studies Diego Cцёo in 1482-1486 on the coast of Africa. Dias successfully reached 26 б° 30 'S, but the storm took it away from the coast to the south. In search of land Dias sailed to the east, then north, reaching the shore, he swam along the east.
