KAMPA Robert (Campin Robert)

Born c.. 1380. According to surviving documents, Campen, painter of Tournai, was the teacher of the famous Rogier van der Weyden and Jacques Dare, referred to as his disciples from 1427 to 1432. In 1909, Julen de Loo suggested that Kampen could be the author of works whose origin remained undetermined for a long time: in their style there are many features in common with the altar Jacques Dara, as well as early works by Rogier. This gave de Loo opportunity to put forward the hypothesis that this group of paintings could be created by the wizard, who worked several years earlier and, possibly, a teacher Dare and Rogier van der Weyden. Some modern researchers have attempted to attribute these works early period of creativity Rogier. However, they are somewhat coarser in the picturesque technique, which leads to higher contrast and volume cut-off and less aristocratic by nature of their images, as the work of the last. The group attributed Kampen works include four fragments of altars, which are now stored in Stцєdel in Frankfurt. Three of them, as is commonly believed, originate from Flemalskogo abbey, under the name of which the author of these fragments was named Flemalskogo Wizard. Attribution Kampen triptych, formerly owned by the Countess Merode and was in Tongerloo in Belgium, was the cause of other nicknames artist - Master of Merode altar. Currently, this altar is in the Metropolitan Museum (New York). Brushes Kampen also belong to Christmas from the museum in Dijon, two sash TN. Altar Werle stored in the Prado, and about 20 paintings, some of them - only fragments of larger works or modern master copies of long-lost works. Kampen died April 26, 1444.
