POCKETS Theodor von (Karman Theodore von)

(1881-1963)
Born May 11, 1881 in Budapest. In 1902 he graduated from the Royal Technical University in Budapest, was engaged in the construction of internal combustion engines. He continued his education at the University of GцІttingen, where in 1909 he defended his dissertation, a Ph.D., and until 1912 served as associate. In 1913-1930 he was a professor and director of the Aerodynamic Institute at the University of Aachen, . in 1915-1918 headed the research department of the air force of Austria-Hungary, . engaged helicopter, . and from 1922 to 1928 worked as a consultant in firms 'Junkers' and 'Zeppelin',

Among the most famous works Karman - theoretical and experimental research in the field of aero-, hydro-and thermodynamics, strength of aircraft structures and materials, theory of plasticity and elasticity, strength of materials. Carman was engaged in such fundamental problems of subsonic aerodynamics, the longitudinal stability of aircraft, turbulence, boundary layer, flow profile, as well as issues of supersonic aerodynamics. Developed a number of mathematical methods of strength calculations, the solution of even purely academic tasks is always accompanied by the findings and results, which were important for engineering practice. Carman was one of the founders and first president (1960-1961) International Academy of Astronautics, advisor to several major aerospace firms, a member of many foreign academies and scientific societies. In 1948 was established by the international prize of its name, is named after him one of the craters on the Moon.

Carman died in Aachen May 6, 1963.
