Biography Karolyi Mihaly (Karolyi, Mihaly)
(1875-1955) Born March 4, 1875 in Fote (Hungary). Since 1910 - Member of Parliament, later - the leader of one of the organizations of the Independence Party. Karolyi - the author of the doctrine, . according to which Hungary must minimize its ties with Austria, . pursue a policy of reconciliation with its neighbors, . seek support nevengerskih peoples through concessions in the field of culture, . to democratic reforms, . including the distribution of land among peasants, . Karolyi spoke out against official policy, and when the authorities' policy led to the military defeat of 1918, received wide popular support. King of Hungary and emperor of Austria Charles I appointed him prime minister. October 31, 1918 Karolyi led government made up of members of his party, 'independent' politicians, radicals and social democrats. November 16 Hungary was proclaimed a republic, and Kц?rolyi was elected provisional president on Jan. 11, 1919.
