Biography Petrus Christus (Christus Petrus)
His independent artistic activity started in 1444 in Bruges, perhaps after working in the workshop of Jan van Eyck. He left many works dating from 1446 to 1457 and signed by the Greek acronym for the name of Christ - XPI, which he apparently used as a reduction of its name. In these studies, there is strong influence of the style the brothers Van Eyck, sometimes just repeated by their composition and motives. Sometimes the same Christus demonstrates originality and rich imagination. Among the most famous works of the artist - Portrait of Edward Graymstouna (1446, London, National Gallery), Portrait of the monk-Cartesians (1446, New York, Metropolitan Museum), SW. Eligius (1449, Metropolitan, a collection Lehmann), The Virgin and Child (1449), Madonna with Saints (1457, Frankfurt, Stцєdel), Lamentation (c.. 1460, Brussels, Royal Museum of Fine Arts).
