Lauri thought of a great cycle of novels called endless wanderings, in which his masterpiece, at the foot of the volcano, were to occupy a central place. In this unusual novel recreated the last day of life, Jeffrey Fermin, perpetually drunken British consul in the Mexican town. Gathering clouds of World War II (the action takes place in 1939), and Fermцґn are desperately seeking to defend their dignity in the face of oppressing his frustration. In the complex symbolic poetics of the novel death of Fermin correlated with the universal myths of suffering and rebirth, as the fall of Adam and the story of Faust, while the imagery of the book goes back to Dante Hell. Seal of genius, evident in the novel at the foot of the volcano, marked, and the posthumous publication Heritage Lauri - poetry, collections of short prose and the novel Autumn ferry Gabriolu (October Ferry to Gabriola, 1970).
