(1859-1924)
Born April 7, 1859 in Mayen, near Koblenz. He studied at the universities of Berlin, Munich and Strasbourg. In 1884 received a master's degree. In 1886-1888 was an assistant University of Wц?rzburg, in 1889-1891 he taught at the University of Strasbourg. Winter months of 1890 and 1891 held in Italy at the zoological station in Naples. In 1891 he moved to the U.S.. He taught biology at Bryn Mawr College, in 1892-1902 - Professor of Physiology and Experimental Biology, University of Chicago, in 1902-1910 - University of California. In 1910 he headed the Department of Experimental Biology, the Rockefeller Institute in New York, where he worked until the end of life.
It is widely known for work on artificial parthenogenesis Loeb - the development of an egg without fertilization, under the influence of physical or chemical factors. Carrying out experiments on artificial insemination, Loeb received the hybrid species, never hybridize in the wild. The physical-chemical theory of tissue regeneration, studied the effect of salts on the living cell, particularly in the developing egg. Laid the foundations of the ionic theory of excitation. Investigated the effect of temperature on the life expectancy of animals showed that low temperatures contribute to its increase. He studied behavior of proteins in solution

. Loeb founded the 'Journal of General Physiology' ( 'Journal of General Physiology'). Loeb died in Hamilton, Bermuda February 11, 1924.
