(1817-1878)
Born in London on April 18, 1817. His literary career began in 1840 with the publication of articles on the French drama in the journal 'Westminster Review' ( 'Westminster Review'), . began a series of essays on European literature and drama, . which appeared in leading periodicals of the time in a quarter century and provided him a high reputation and literary critic,
. List of most important publications of Lewis shows the scale of his interests: History of Philosophy in biographies (The Biographical History of Philosophy, . 1845-1846), Spanish Drama: Lope de Vega and Calderon (The Spanish Drama: Lope de Vega and Calderon, . 1846); philosophical and literary essays, . essays about the theater in which he founded the journal 'Leader' ( 'The Leader'), . the editor of which he was in 1850-1855, . as well as in the journal 'Fortnightly rivyu' ( 'Fortnightly Review'), . which he edited in 1865-1866, Philosophy of Science Comte (Comte's Philosophy of the Sciences, . 1853) and The Life and Works of Goethe (The Life and Works of Goethe, . 1855),
. Among other works of Lewis - Physiology of Common Life (Physiology of Common Life, 1859-1860), questions about life and spirit (Problems of Life and Mind, 1873-1879).
In 1854 he began a close relationship with Lewis, Mary Ann Evans, partly because of his support, she began a career writer under the pseudonym George Eliot.

In subsequent years, Lewis has published several scientific and philosophical works, though not widely recognized. His literary-critical work, however, must be assessed as excellent and important for the subsequent development of literary criticism in England. It is widely thought and responding to the latest intellectual movement, . Lewis anticipated Matthew Arnold, . sharply criticizing his contemporaries for provincialism, . complacency and lack of culture, condemned the excesses of Romanticism and praised the French classical literature,
. Lewis died in London on 28 November 1878.
