MCCORMICK, Cyrus Hall (McCormick Cyrus Hall)

(1809-1884)
Born February 15, 1809 in the district Rokbridzh (pc. Virginia). He studied at the local school. In 1831, invented and patented a plow for plowing of slopes, in the same year constructed a mechanical reaper. Seven of its main units (divisor, the reel, cutting machine with a reciprocating motion, fingers and inserts, platform, road wheels with the main drive, the drive side feed) are used in modern designs. In 1847, McCormick opened in Chicago venture to produce headers and in the first year sold 800 cars. In 1857, offered his reaper in the European market. Developed and introduced modern methods of production and marketing, which contributed to the creation and dissemination of other agricultural implements. Participated in the development of the mining industry and railway transport, was engaged in publishing newspapers, charities and political activities. McCormick died in Chicago May 13, 1884.
