Biography Golda Meir (Meir Golda)
(1898-1978)
Born May 3, 1898 in Kiev. In 1906 his family emigrated to the United States, where she graduated from Teachers College. In 1915 he joined Poalei Zion (Zionist organization of workers) and in 1921 emigrated to Palestine with her husband, Morris Myerson (mind. 1951). In 1956 took the Hebraic name Meir (burn brightly).
In 1928, Meir was elected to the female workers' council Histadrut. In 1934 became secretary of the executive committee of that organization, in 1946 - president of the Political Bureau of the Jewish Agency. Since 1948 was appointed ambassador in Moscow, served as Minister of Labor and from 1956 to 1960 - Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 1966 was elected General Secretary of Mapai (Israel Workers Party), but when Mapai became part of Israel's Labor Party, became Secretary of the latest. After the death of Levi Eshkol in 1969, was nominated by party factions in the Prime Minister.

The main problem for the new prime minister began the Arab territories occupied during the Six Day War in 1967. The right wing party, headed by Defense Minister Moshe Dayan insisted on the inclusion of these territories into Israel. Moderates, led by Deputy Prime Minister Egal Allon thought it possible to return the Sinai to Egypt and the Golan Heights - Syria. In 1973 and 1974, disputes over the responsibility for Israel's unpreparedness for war, which began during the holiday of Yom Kippur, moved to require a change in leadership. In April 1974, Meir resigned.

Meir died in Jerusalem on Dec. 8, 1978.
