Biography Plaskett, John Stanley (Plaskett John Stanley)
(1865-1941)
Born November 17, 1865 in Woodstock (Ontario). In 1899 he graduated from the University of Toronto, where he worked until 1903. In 1903-1918 he worked at the observatory in Ottawa. Supervised installation of 183-cm reflector in Victoria (British Columbia) (in 1918 became director of the Astrophysical Observatory), in 1935 - installing the 208-cm telescope Makdonaldskogo.
The main focus of Plaskett's star spectroscopy. Plaskett for multi-year program to determine the radial velocities of stars forming the basis of observation to confirm the hypothesis of the rotation of the Galaxy. Fulfilled a number of spectral studies of hot and spectral binaries. In 1922 he discovered the system with large mass, called 'star Plaskett'. He was awarded many prestigious awards: Gold Medal Royal Society of London (1930), Rumford Medal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, etc.. Died Plaskett in Victoria (British Columbia) Oct. 17, 1941.
