Biography Ribera Josö? (Ribera Jose)
(1591-1652) Or Husepe de Ribera, nicknamed Spanoletto (Little Spaniard), was born at Xativa, near Valencia in 1591, studied under Francisco Ribalta. In 1613 went to Italy and from 1616 until his death on Sept. 2, 1652 he lived in Naples, working under orders of the local clergy and the Madrid court. He is perfectly able to convey subtle nuances of the structure of the human body, every little wrinkle, the softness of women's and children's skin and architecture of drapes. Artist put his art, with its careful drawing and dramatic light and shade, in the service of an ardent faith and harsh. Ribera was the creator of a number of new subjects; Madonna and the saints, ascetics and penitents, philosophers, and filled with noble tramp with his paintings caused numerous imitations contemporaries and followers. Most of his works are in the Prado Museum and the Neapolitan churches.
