Biography Charles Fellows (Fellows Charles)
(1799-1860)
Born in Nottingham in August 1799. He took part in the activities of the British Association for the Development of Science. In 1838, explored the river Xanthos (sovr. Kodzhachay) and found the ruins of Xanthus (the ancient capital of Lycia) and some other Lycian cities, including Tlos. Upon his return to England published a travel diary in Asia Minor (A Journal Written during an Excursion in Asia Minor, 1839), which described his discoveries. In 1839, 1841 and 1844 Fellows made several expeditions in Lycia, which identified the ruins of 13 cities, by sending to the British Museum many works of art and architectural fragments. In 1845 he was knighted. Balance of life spent on the Isle of Wight. Fellows died in London on November 8, 1860.
