Biography Fustel de Coulanges Numa Denis
(1830-1889) Born in Paris on March 18, 1830. In 1850 entered the Ecole Normale Supц?rieure in Paris, and in 1853 was sent to the French School at Athens, conducted excavations at Chios. In 1855 Fustel taught in high school in Amiens, and later in high school Sv.Lyudovika in Paris. In 1860 he was invited to the University of Strasbourg. In 1864 published his first significant work - civilian communities of the ancient world (La Cit antique), a comparative study of Greek and Roman society. In 1870 he returned to Paris and in 1871 became a lecturer at Ecole Normale Supц?rieure. Four years later began teaching at the Sorbonne, in 1880 became the rector of the Ecole Normale Supц?rieure. Later, once taught at the Sorbonne. Main work Fustel de Coulanges - Ancient History of the social system of France (L'Histoire des institutions politiques de l'ancienne France, . 6 tt., . 1875-1892), . in which he argued, . that European society is based on a foundation, . laid in Rome, . and the influence of the Germans greatly exaggerated, . Much of this work was published posthumously. Died Fustel de Coulanges in Massy near Paris, September 12, 1889.
