SCHALLER, George Beals (Schaller George Beals)

Born May 26, 1933 in Berlin. When the boy was seven years old, the family emigrated to the U.S.. In 1955, Schaller graduated from the University of Alaska. During the four years studied the behavior of wild animals in the Colville River area, in Katmayskom National Wildlife Refuge and the Arctic zone. Posted fundamental work on migration and feeding reindeer.
While working on his thesis at the University of Wisconsin, Schaller, organized in 1959 an expedition to Zaire to study the behavior of mountain gorillas are threatened with extinction. More than a year Schaller and his wife have lived among these animals have learned to recognize individual animals, observed changes in their moods and habits. In 1962, the results of research Schaller defended his thesis and wrote his first book, The mountain gorilla (Mountain Gorilla, 1963) which won awards in 1965, Wildlife Conservation Society. The expedition to Zaire partially funded the New York Zoological Society. In 1966, Schaller was hired in this society, and in 1980 was appointed Director of Wildlife.

Subsequently Schaller undertook the expedition to India (1963-1965), Tanzania (1966-1969), Nepal (1970), Pakistan (1972-1975), Brazil (1976-1979). As a result of these expeditions has written several books and several scientific and popular articles. . From 1981 to 1984 Schaller studied the behavior of giant pandas in the Wolong Nature Reserve (China). In 1985, watching the life of wild animals in Tibet, in particular the snow leopard and herbivores such as wild ass, gazelle and deer.

In 1980, Schaller was awarded a gold medal at the World Wildlife Fund.
