Biography Robert Grant Aitken (Aitken Robert Grant)
(1864-1951) Born December 31, 1864 in Jackson (pc. California). In 1887 he graduated from Williams College (Williamstown, pc. Massachusetts), in 1888-1895 and taught mathematics and astronomy, first at the Lawrence Livermore College, then at Pacific University. In 1895 he obtained a position assistant at Lick Observatory astronomer working. In 1930-1935 was director of the observatory. He studied double stars and comets, planets and satellites of weak visual photometry of faint stars. First undertook a systematic review of the northern sky to search for binary stars, discovered about 4400 binaries. Continuing the work of C. Burnham, thoroughly researched, double stars, their common characteristics, motion and orbit. Has published two-volume work A new general catalog of double stars within 120 б° of the North celestial pole (New General Catalogue of Double Stars within 120 б° of the North Pole, . 1932), . which collected data on more than 17 000 visual double stars, . Book Aitken Double Star (The Binary Stars, 1918, 1935) became a classic work in this area. Aitken died in Berkeley (pc. California) October 29, 1951.
