(1872-1957)
Born July 5, 1872 in Troyes. He was educated at the Lycц?e Louis le Grand and the Ecole Normale Supц?rieure. For ten years he worked as a teacher, has prepared a doctoral dissertation Madame Recamier and her friends (Madame de Rcamier et ses amis, 1904).
In 1904, Lyons became a member of the council in 1905 - the Mayor of Lyon. In 1912 he was elected to the Senate. During the First World War - Minister of Public Works in the office of Brian A.. In the elections of 1919 Herriot was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Radical Party. There remained the leader of the party (except for 1927-1931 and 1935-1937) until the exit in October 1956.

After the 1924 election, in which the winner was the Left Bloc, formed a government of Herriot. In the same year, Herriot was elected chairman of the Chamber of Deputies. After a second brief tenure as prime minister (19-22 June 1926), he headed the government in the third and last time (from 4 June to 18 December 1932). Supporter of the Lausanne Agreement, . to end the ongoing dispute since 1918 on reparations, . Herriot failed in solving the problem of the French debt of the U.S., . the need for payment of which persisted after a visit to Washington in April 1933,
. Log on as a government minister in cabinets G. Doumergue, P. Laval and Flandin-P.Eten (from 9 February 1934 to 24 June 1936). In June 1936, was re-elected Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies. In 1940, Herriot joined in opposition to the Government of Petц?n. In September 1942 was convicted of subversion, arrested, and in 1944 was deported to Germany.

Herriot was liberated by Soviet troops 22 April 1945 and returned to his responsibilities as Mayor of Lyon. A witness at the trial of Petц?n. In January 1947 he returned to the National Assembly as an MP in 1947-1954 served as chairman of the Assembly. In his last major speech in Parliament in 1954, spoke in favor of improving relations with the Soviet Union and against the rearmament of Germany. October 14, 1956 in the struggle for leadership of the party supported the candidature P.Mendes-France.

Herriot - the author of Beethoven's Life (La vie de Beethoven, 1930), a biography of Philo of Alexandria, memories of his trips to Russia and America, the political memoir.

Died Herriot in Lyon, March 26, 1957.
