(1872-1957)
The second son of Danish Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Louise, was named Charles. Born August 3, 1872 in Copenhagen. As the Danish prince received a strict upbringing, becoming a 14-year old sea cadet, in 1889 joined the Naval officer's school. In June 1895 he married Princess Maud, daughter of the Prince of Wales, future King Edward VII.
During the crisis of the union between Sweden and Norway, the Norwegians turned to Carl Danish to assume the Norwegian throne. Carl demanded a referendum in favor of retaining the monarchy and has the support of the population. November 8, 1905 Norwegian Storting unanimously elected Charles King of Norway. Carl took the name Haakon himself drevnenorvezhskoe (VII), and for his son Alexander - the name of Olaf. Becoming the first in the last 400 years, the King of Norway's independence, November 23, he sailed from Copenhagen. 22 July 1906 Haakon VII and his consort were crowned in Trondheim, the ancient capital of Norway.

When in 1940 in the German troops invaded Norway, Carl refused to appoint the prime minister of the Norwegian Nazi V. Quisling, and retreated with the army in the north. After a 62-day resistance Haakon VII returned to England with the government, which continued to operate in exile. After the defeat of Germany in 1946, Hц?kon returned to Norway. Haakon died in Oslo on 21 September 1957.
