Born May 3, 1860 in Edinburgh. He studied at Edinburgh Academy, Edinburgh and Jena. In 1884 received his doctorate in medicine. From 1887 he worked at the department of physiology at Oxford University - as an assistant, then professor. In 1897 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of London, in 1905 - a board member of New College, Oxford University. Supervised physiological laboratories at Doncaster (from 1912) and Birmingham (from 1921).
Haldane - one of the founders of the doctrine of human breathing, its regulation and role in this process of carbon dioxide. Scientist studied the toxic effects of carbon monoxide, has developed methods of dealing with this gas poisoning. For the first time determined the composition of alveolar air, the person making use of their gas-analyzing apparatus (apparatus Haldane). In 1911, led by high-altitude expedition to Pikes Peak (unit. Colorado), embarked on a study of adaptation to extreme conditions. Dealing with the welfare of the miners, studied the influence of humidity on the tolerance of high body temperature. Investigated the interaction between respiration and circulation, determined the cardiac output during muscular activity. A new method of decompression, created a foundation to prevent decompression sickness. In 1933 participated in the creation and testing of the first high-rise space suit. The results of his scientific activities Haldane summarized in the book Breath (Respiration, 1935), which was written based on lectures delivered at Yale University. Among his other works - Methods of analysis of air (Methods of Air Analysis, 1912; 2-ed. with I. Graham, . 1934); and in the environment on the example of physiology of respiration (Organism and Environment as Illustrated by the Physiology of Breathing, . 1917); New Physiology (The New Physiology, . 1919), Philosophical Foundations of Biology (The Philosophical Basis of Biology, . 1931),
.
Haldane died in Oxford, March 15, 1936.
