Biography Carl HOFER (Hofer Karl)
(1878-1955)
Born October 11, 1878 in Karlsruhe and there in 1896-1901 he studied at the Academy of Arts. In 1903-1908 he lived in Rome and painted on the subjects, later repeatedly returned, such as Girls on the beach or a girl at the window. In these paintings the human figures interpreted by plastic, but the color is of secondary importance. In 1908-1913 Hofer lived in Paris, and in 1913-1914 - in Berlin. Deep impression on him made the paintings by Cezanne and El Greco. Travel to India in 1909 and 1911 contributed to the transition to a more free and active use of color. In 1914-1917 Hofer was in an internment camp in France and the exchange was in Switzerland, and in 1919 returned to Berlin. In the works of this time is dominated by variations on the theme of death, prophetic images of bombed cities and the next succeeding horrors of war, skeletons, masks, scary ghosts. These paintings give the impression of flatness, their gloom is broken sometimes only a few color accents.
Since 1920 Hofer led teaching in Berlin. In 1923 he was elected a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts. When in 1933 Hitler came to power, Hofer was deprived of the right of teaching, he was forbidden to work and exhibit. In 1937, Hofer's paintings were removed from German museums. In 1943, some works by the artist died during the bombing. After the war, Hofer became the director of the Higher School of Fine Arts in Charlottenburg, and did much to upgrade this school. After 1945 he wrote his most outstanding works. In painting, the artist engaged in graphic, written several books and numerous articles, was a member of the editorial board of the journal 'Visual Arts' ( 'Bildende Kunst'). Since 1947 was president of the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. Hofer died in Berlin on April 3, 1955.
