Before the revolution, he worked in the Statistical Office of Smolensk zemstvos. During agitation of the peasants Gzhatsk County threatened to arrest him, which saved the hasty removal of the border. In Vienna, the D. enrolled in the University. Upon his return to Russia in 1907. studied the historical-philological faculty of St. Petersburg University. Member of the First World War. After the revolution he worked in the Book House. Taught at the Arkhangelsk Pedagogical Institute and the collection of Old Believer manuscripts. Then he worked in two teacher training institutes in Leningrad.

Spectrum Research D. very wide. He wrote about Pushkin, Chekhov, Koltsov, Lermontov, Herzen, Turgenev, Plescheevo. But his main theme was F.M. Dostoevskiy.D. 4 volumes of letters prepared by the writer, traced with other Russian writers discovered his creative laboratory.
