Biography Apollonius of Perga (Apollonios)
Apollonius of Perga, Apollonios, from Perge in Pamphylia, c.. 262-190 years. BC. e., Greek mathematician and astronomer. He worked mainly in Alexandria with Ptolemy III. Author of many partially surviving works. Elements from the writings of the science of cones in 8 books preserved in the original book. I-IV, and in Arabic translation - book. V-VII. The first three books A dedicated Evdemu Pergamon, the remaining 5 books Attal I, king of Pergamum. A. summarized and developed the theory of conic sections. He introduced the term ellipse, parabola and hyperbola. It is considered a precursor of analytical geometry. Translation of the first 4 books in the Latin language complied Kommandin (Bologna, 1566). As astronomer A. developed a general theory of epicycles, which were based Hipparchus of Nica and Claudius Ptolemy.
