M elnikayte Iozovna Mary was born March 18, 1923 in eastern Lithuania in the town of Zarasai. Litovka.
In August 1941, when the Nazis came to Lithuania, was evacuated with other Lithuanian Komsomol in Tyumen. In 1942 he went to the front, fought as a partisan in Byelorussia and Lithuania. Guerrillas derail the enemy trains with military equipment, blew warehouses, committing daring raids on enemy garrisons, burned manor houses and farms, seized by Hitler's colonists. She was in the unit most active fighter. Participated in sabotage, went to the exploration, conducted extensive work among the people.
L assuring 1943 Melnikayte sent at the head of the guerrilla group to perform important tasks. In the forest on the guerrillas ran into a punitive detachment. During the unequal battle Maria was wounded and captured. She did not give the location of the detachment. It was executed July 13, 1943 on the square of the village Dе?kе?tas.
. For exemplary performance of command assignments in the enemy rear MI Melnikayte posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union in 1944.
