In September 1943, troops of the North-Caucasian Front, together with the Black Sea Fleet launched offensive operations in order to cleanse from the Nazis of the Taman Peninsula. From the first days of the onset of fierce fighting took place for Mr. Novorossiysk, which was considered a key defense of the Kuban bridgehead enemy. The city was heavily fortified with both land and sea. The approaches to the city were covered aprons pillboxes, an extensive network of trenches, thick multi-row minefields and barbed wire.
